Basic liability coverage
First let's look at liability coverage. Liability coverage is required in 48 of the 50 states, as well as the District of Columbia. Liability coverage provides for your obligation to pay for bodily injury and property damage should you be found to be responsible for accident claims. Liability coverage is usually represented by three numbers (e.g. 20/10/40); these are the minimal amounts of coverage you should have:
- Bodily injury per person (in the example above, this would be $20,000 per person).
- Property damage (in the example above, this would be $10,000 per accident).
- Bodily injury per accident (in the example above, it would be $40,000 per accident).
The required amounts will be different from state to state, and they may also be known as "mandatory minimums." Obtaining insurance for the mandatory minimums will usually yield you the lowest possible rate in your own state, but they also offer the least coverage.
